Volunteer with
Friends of Sunkhaze Meadows
The Friends of Sunkhaze
Meadows need your help to continue in our efforts to bring the
Refuge into the community as an important place to protect,
enjoy and learn about. The Refuge has so much value to the
community and is a place that deserves everyone’s attention.
The Friends of Sunkhaze Meadows cannot succeed
without your help!
We would welcome you to our board meetings every month and
would appreciate articles about the Refuge or plants and
wildlife that live in the Refuge. Anything you can do to spread
the word about Sunkhaze Meadows is something that the Friends
would appreciate, to ensure we can sustain our organization for
the coming years. Following are just some of the opportunities
currently available: If you can help, please
email
us!
Trail Roving
The refuge has three
parking areas, five trailheads, and about seven miles of trails. We need your help in maintaining
these areas, which can include picking up trash, clearing fallen
debris, reporting vandalism or needed repairs, stocking kiosks with brochures, etc.
Purple Loosestrife Patrol
Purple loosestrife is a nonnative, invasive plant that is a threat to the ecological integrity of the refuge. Volunteers can help by looking for infestations on and near the refuge. We especially need people to be on the lookout for the plant along the streams, in wet areas, and along the roads that border the refuge. If found, it can be hand pulled or cut, and then double-bagged in heavy duty garbage bags; or just tell one of the board members about it. The plant typically blooms in late June through late August. Click here for a brochure that you can download, print, and then share with your neighbors, family, and friends. Spread the word, not the weed!
Newsletter Contributions
We welcome submissions or stories from or about the Refuge for use in our quarterly newsletters. Articles can be emailed to
sunkhazenews@gmail.com.
Naturalists to Guide Outings
We would like to provide
the public with at least one guided outing each month. In the
past we've had people lead canoe trips and hikes focused on
wildlife tracking, twig ID, vernal pools, woodcock, owls, etc.
Do you have a passion you'd like to share with others? Or maybe
you know someone who does?
Photographers
We are always looking for
great photos that capture the true beauty, wildness, and value
of the refuge for our newsletter, website, and brochures. If you
have photos you've taken at the refuge that you'd like to share,
we'd greatly appreciate your sharing them with us. We would be
sure to credit you if we use them.
Officers and Board Members
We all lead busy lives and
in order to prevent burnout, we are always looking for more
motivated people to be a part of our board.
