Visiting the refuge is
easy. The nearest and most familiar town is Old Town. You can
reach Old Town from the south by traveling interstate I-95N to
exit 193, Stillwater Avenue. From the top of the ramp, you will
turn right and travel through 6
traffic lights; approximately 5 miles. You’ll cross the
Penobscot River before you’re done. Just before the 6th traffic
light, you will see a small sign on the bridge on the right
identifying the refuge.
The Milford division of
the refuge is located in the Town of Milford, Penobscot County,
Maine, approximately fourteen miles north of Bangor. This is the
primary region of the refuge, comprising approximately 10,000
acres of wilderness, including varied habitat such as bog and
forest. The Penobscot River, which flows from north to south,
forms the western boundary of the Town of Milford and separates
Milford from Old Town. The refuge is located approximately three
miles east of the Penobscot River and is bounded on the west by
a Bangor Hydro Electric Power Company transmission line, on the
south and east by the County Road, and on the north and east by
the Stud Mill Road. The refuge lies within Wildlife Management
District 18 as designated by the Maine Department of Inland
Fisheries and Wildlife.
Just after the 6th traffic
light, you will come to the County Road on the right. Turn onto
the County Road and travel until the road becomes dirt;
approximately 2 miles. Shortly after the road become dirt, you
will see the first NWR sign on the left. From this point to the
stop sign (approximately 6 miles), you will be following the
eastern boundary of the refuge.
To get to the headquarters
of Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, exit Interstate 95
at Exit 191 in Orono, Maine (Kelley Road). Turn right off the
exit ramp to a blinking light at U.S. 2. Turn left on U.S. 2 and
continue east through Orono to Old Town Maine. The headquarters
is located at 1168 Main Street (U.S. 2), about 1/4 mile past the
"Welcome to Old Town" sign. Directions to all refuge units may
be obtained at the headquarters.
To reach the southern half
of the refuge, take the County Road from U.S. 2 in the center
of Milford. To reach the northern half of the refuge, follow
U.S. 2 north to Costigan and turn right onto Greenfield Road.
Take the first right, proceed for about ½ mile, and then turn
left onto the Stud Mill Road. Continue on the Stud Mill Road for
about two miles to the refuge boundary. The U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service makes an effort to accommodate all visitors to the refuge. Information for
