Canoeing

For a short
trip, launch where Sunkhaze Stream crosses U.S.
2 and paddle up the gently flowing stream to
Sunkhaze Meadows Bog. The round-trip will take
2-3 hrs. Please park at the pulloff near the
interpretive sign and hand carry your canoe to
the water. The nearby private driveway cannot
be blocked by your vehicle at any time.
For a longer
trip, park in the Ash Landing parking lot,
located near where Sunkhaze Stream crosses the
Stud Mill Rd. There is a portage of 250 ft from
the parking lot to the stream. The average
paddle time to U.S. 2 is 5-6 hours. There may
be several beaver dams to cross along the way.
Carlton Pond
Waterfowl Production Area, located in the town
of Troy, is also best explored via canoe. Turn
east from U.S. 202 in Troy onto Maine Route
220. Go about 3 miles and turn right onto Bog
Road. Bog Road crosses over Carlton Pond after
about ½ mile; there’s a small parking area on
the right at this point.
Please use
caution when hauling canoes in or out of streams
close to the road, and use designated parking
lots whenever possible. Do not park along the
Stud Mill Road. This private road is used by
heavily-loaded logging trucks which have the
right-of-way. If you are using the
privately-owned canoe launch site where Sunkhae
Stream crosses U.S. 2, please park at the
pulloff near the interpretive sign and hand
carry your canoe to the water. The nearby
driveway cannot be blocked by your vehicle at
any time. Contact the refuge manager before your
visit to get the latest information on
access, special activities, regulations, and
weather and stream conditions.
