Hiking, Cross-country Skiing, and Snowshoeing

Most refuge trails are wet in the spring and summer, so visitors should wear knee-high rubber boots and bring insect repellent.

The Ash Landing Trail offers a short, pleasant walk through a mixed-wood forest, leading to Sunkhaze Stream. This trail also provides winter access to the peatland for cross-country skiers and showshoers when sufficient ice thickness exists.

The Carter Meadow Road loop trail is located along the County Road, 6.4 miles from U.S. 2 in Milford. Follow the road for about ¼ mile and continue on a footpath to an observation platform built by the Friends of Sunkhaze Meadows. Round trip distance is about two miles. Park your vehicle at the parking lot just past the gated entrance to Carter Meadow Road.

The Oak Point Trail is located along the County Road, 6.8 miles from U.S. 2 in Milford. The trail leads to an oak grove opening onto the peatland. Round trip distance is two miles. Park your vehicle at the parking lot just past the gated entrance to Carter Meadow Road.

The Johnson Brook Trail is a 2.5-mile loop trail that begins at the parking lot on the County Road 8.1 miles from U.S. 2 in Milford. Boardwalks provide crossings over wet areas in the upland forest.

The Buzzy Brook Trails are located in the northwestcorner of the refuge and can only be reached by walking down McLaughlin Road from the Stud Mill Road. These trails are a network of old logging roads and are rarely maintained. The distance is 2.3 miles to Buzzy Brook via the North Buzzy Brook Trail. A topographic map and compass is recommended if you choose to visit this area of the refuge. Visitors should also be aware that McLaughlin Road is used by snowmobiles, logging trucks, and other vehicles.
